Opera Goes to the Library

ONI performing artists will provide interactive music/educational programming for children, families, and community members in local library branches throughout Philadelphia and Montgomery County.   Library audience members will experience traditional European and contemporary American opera repertoire in a fun and informal setting at their neighborhood library.  This interactive music program will provide students and families with a better understanding of opera as an art form and stimulate interest in the performing arts, language and literature.  The students will see performers in entertaining operatic roles – artists of African-American, Asian, Latino, and European descent.  Library staff members will recommend reading materials relating to these and other concepts associated with the ONI performances.  The staff members will utilize these materials to be used during the performances and for pre and post educational activities. ONI plans to present a series of Opera Goes to the Library programs with an emphasis on low income families and communities.  This performance series will also include ‘Book Mobile’ presentations for communities that do not have a library branch in their area. Program coordination between ONI, library staff and other partnering organizations will take place in advance of each performance including logistics, audience development, repertoire selection and rehearsals.
